Kottayam, January 13, 2025: Malayala Manorama’s pioneering Hridayapoorvam Heart Care Project marked its silver jubilee with a grand event held at the KC Mammen Mappillai Hall here on Monday. Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who inaugurated the event, termed the initiative ‘a journey of compassion and humanity.’ The Governor lauded Hridayapoorvam’s unwavering commitment to providing free heart surgeries to underprivileged patients.
In his inaugural address, the Governor, attending his first public event in Kerala after assuming charge on January 2, commended the project’s distinctiveness: “While anyone can administer medicines, this mission stands out for its genuine human touch.” He also emphasized the need for more such initiatives that bring healthcare directly to rural communities. The function was presided over by Dr Tessy Thomas, India's ‘Missile Woman’ and Vice-Chancellor of Noorul Islam University.
Earlier, Kerala Health Minister Veena George, inaugurating a panel discussion as part of the event, said there was an urgent need to address lifestyle-related ailments. “Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. With 38% of Keralites suffering from hypertension, accessible and strategic healthcare interventions like Hridayapoorvam are crucial,” she said. Dr Sreeja Pavithran and Dr Ravi Agarwal took part in the panel discussion on congenital heart diseases in children.
A special commemorative postal cover titled ‘Hridayapoorvam @25’ was unveiled by Dr Ajit Mullassery, Director of Cardiology at Madras Medical Mission.
Malayala Manorama Chief Resident Editor Harsha Mathew honoured paramedical staff from the Madras Medical Mission, namely, Philip Mathew; V. Murali; Abi Sam; and Balaji; for their contribution to the Hridayapoorvam initiative.
